Pensacola State’s Adult Education students recently collected food for Manna Food Bank. The students spread the word that they wanted to collect food and the entire PSC Family ─ students, staff and faculty ─ contributed a whopping 230 pounds of food.
WSRE, PBS for the Gulf Coast, is now accepting viewer questions for the upcoming broadcast of “Legislative Review: Dialogue with the Delegation” set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12.

The following legislators of the Northwest Florida delegation are expected to participate: Sens. Doug Broxson (District 1) and George B. Gainer (District 2); and Reps. Clay Ingram (District 1), Frank White (District 2), Jayer Williamson (District 3) and Mel Ponder (District 4).

Some of Pensacola State’s Collegiate High students transformed the southwest entrance of Building 11 into a sea of purple pinwheels on Friday, Nov. 17.
The students – members of the high school’s Future Business Leaders of America chapter – planted 502 purple pinwheels in observance of the March of Dimes March for Babies Awareness Day.
“The students planted the 502 purple pinwheels to honor the 502 premature babies who were born in Escambia County in 2016,” explained FBLA adviser Evelyn Gant. “They also raised $150 for the nonprofit organization that works to improve the health of mothers and babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.”

“Our holiday tournaments and conference play are coming up and Pirate Booster Club member can receive all the benefits of being a Booster,” said Bill Hamilton, Pensacola State College Athletic Director.
Eight Pensacola State students were initiated into Alpha Gamma Eta, the college’s chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, on Wednesday, Nov. 15.
An international honor society in education, Kappa Delta Pi was founded in 1911 to foster excellence in education and promote fellowship among those dedicated to teaching.
Soul-howling, southern rock guitarist, Mike Cooley performs a solo concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at Pensacola State College’s Ashmore Fine Arts Auditorium, Building 8, on the Pensacola campus.
Best known as the co-founder of Drive-By Truckers along with Patterson Hood, Cooley has proved his mettle as a master songwriter, singer and guitarist whether solo or with a band for more than 30 years.
Military Times names Pensacola State College in its Military Times Best: Colleges 2018 list, formerly known as Best for Vets. The rankings are an editorially independent news project that evaluates a comprehensive survey of veteran and military student services and rates of academic achievement along with other factors that make colleges and universities a good fit for service members, military veterans and their families.
According to Military Times, the rankings were more competitive than ever this year, as a record number of schools participated in the survey, and less than half made the cut. “Of the hundreds of schools that applied, fewer than half received the Military Times Best: Colleges designation this year. Only the best made the cut,” said George Altman, the Military Times editor in charge of the rankings.
For a second consecutive year, winners of the 2017 Walter F. Spara Writing Competition focused on social issues. The outstanding writers were recognized at an awards reception on Wednesday, Nov. 15, in the Anna Lamar Switzer Center.

Humans and animals interacted during Pensacola State College’s Veterinary Technology Program Open House held Thursday on the Warrington campus.
A rooster, chickens, a goat, a mini horse, rodents, a garden snake and even a monitor lizard were among the animals that were on hand at the annual event.
The human toll of incarceration and its effects on families will be addressed at Pensacola State College’s Book Talk set for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at the Edward M. Chadbourne Library.
Open to the public, the free Book Talk will be followed by an informal discussion and question-and-answer session.

The Pensacola State College chapter of the Association of Florida Colleges was named the 2016-17 Chapter of the Year during the 2017 Annual Meeting and Conference held Nov. 1-3 in Palm Harbor.
The Chapter of the Year award is presented based on documentation of functions and events from the 16 categories relating to the goals and mission of AFC. Pensacola State was chosen as the top chapter of the year out of 21 chapters which submitted an entry.
Pensacola State also earned a Platinum Chapter ranking ─ the highest ranking bestowed upon a chapter. The chapter received a Membership Growth Award based on the membership increase May 2016-May 2017.
Jennie Bachmeier, a job developer in Pensacola State College’s Career and Technical Education Department, has been selected as the September Talent of the Month by Kelly Services.
Bachmeier joined the Pensacola State family in August 2016. She was nominated by her supervisor, Deborah Hooks who described Bachmeier as extremely humble and dedicated.
“Jennie is responsible for placing work study students, going over all of the rules with faculty members and students, and she works closely with financial aid on placement of our students,” Hooks said.
Next fall, Ahyiona Vason will trade in her Lady Pirates garb to become a Seahawk at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
On Wednesday, Nov. 8, Vason a 5-foot 4-inch point guard, signed her Letter of Intent to play basketball at UNC Wilmington in 2018-19.
The Montgomery, Alabama, native will graduate in May with an associate degree in sports fitness and recreation management. She said she felt really at home during a September visit to the Division 1-university.
During a difficult season in her life, Teresa Jackson was touched by the kindness and generosity of others.
Today, more than 25 years later, Jackson, an adjunct professor and administrative assistant at Pensacola State College, is still paying it forward.
Jackson collects, bags and provides individual emergency kits for victims of natural disasters. She started making the individual emergency kits following the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that decimated Haiti in 2010.

Pensacola State College graphic design students are commemorating the 100th anniversary of United States involvement in World War I through their senior exhibit at the National Naval Aviation Museum, 1750 Radford Blvd., aboard Naval Air Station Pensacola through November.
The museum is free and open to the public 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. The public is also invited to meet the artists at a reception at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3, at the museum.
