Choral Society of Pensacola to present ‘Her Songs’ on April 21

The Choral Society of Pensacola will celebrate the music of female composers with its presentation of “Her Songs Celebrating Women Composers” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the First United Methodist Church located at 6 E. Wright St. in Pensacola.

Showcasing music from the 17th century through the 21st century, compositions by six women will be presented by a 60-voice chorus. Selections will range from Italian opera to contemporary Chinese-American influences.

TRIO Student Support Services ‘shares the love’ with PSC students

Pensacola State College’s TRIO programs staff celebrated National TRIO Day by “sharing the love” with students on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14.

“We wanted to ‘Share the Love’ in order to raise awareness of our TRIO programs here at Pensacola State College,” Student Support Services Director Rachelle Burns said. National TRIO Day is a great opportunity to do that because it’s a day set aside by Congress to recognize who TRIO is and what we do.”

Theta Chi chapter named a Five Star Chapter at 2018 PTK convention

Pensacola State College’s Theta Chi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa was named a Five Star Chapter at the annual Phi Theta Kappa – Florida 2018 Regional Convention held March 2-4 in Tampa.

“It was such an honor to receive this award from our peers,” said Amber Carey, Pensacola State’s Theta Chi chapter adviser. “All or our student-members work very hard to make the Theta Chi chapter one of the best PTK groups in the state. We are very proud.”

Rainy day video wins PSC baseball team a Blue Wahoos field tarp

A picture may be worth a thousand words but a video turned out to be a home run for the Pensacola State Pirates baseball team.

The Pirates beat out baseball organizations from Arizona to Georgia to win a field tarp from the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. The Blue Wahoos received a new tarp for its seventh season, and held a video contest to find a home for the old one which was still in good condition.

Pensacola State faculty member earns First Diploma at Golden Key competition

Dr. Michael Coleman, a Pensacola State College faculty member, was awarded First Diploma in the 2018 Golden Key Piano Composition Competition.

Coleman’s winning composition, “Room 857,” is written for solo piano. A Pensacola State adjunct music instructor for more than 24 years, he will perform the piece in August at Ehrbar Hall in Vienna, and at Bӧsendorfer Hall at Mozarthaus during the Golden Key Music Festival at Vienna.

Eileen Myles shares words of wisdom with PSC students, faculty

Poet and novelist Eileen Myles, who has been described as “one of the savviest and most restless intellects in contemporary literature,” presented a reading from “Afterglow (a dog memoir),” a poetry workshop, and a book talk during Feb. 8-10 as part of the Pensacola State College Lyceum Series.

Myles, the author of more than 20 books including “I Must Be Living Twice: New & Selected Poems,” and the 2015 reissue of “Chelsea Girls,” spoke on Feb. 8 in Ashmore Fine Arts Auditorium.

Pirates, Lady Pirates basketball players named to FCSAA All-Panhandle Conference Teams

Pensacola State College Pirates and Lady Pirates basketball players have been named to the Florida College System Activities Association All-Panhandle Conference Teams.

Nia Johnson and Naterria Luster were selected to the FCSAA All-Panhandle Conference First Team Women’s Basketball Team.

Johnson, a 5 foot 7 guard, is a sophomore from Sandersville, Georgia. Luster, a 6 foot forward, is a sophomore and from Richmond, Virginia.

Victory Media designates PSC a 2018 Military Friendly School for ninth year

Pensacola State College has been named a 2018 Military Friendly® School by Victory Media.

This is the ninth consecutive year, PSC has received the designation awarded to U.S. colleges, universities and trade schools that dedicate resources to military students to ensure success in the classroom and after graduation.

PSC has more than 2,000 veterans, active duty personnel and their dependents enrolled in classes, said College President Ed Meadows.

In March, Pensacola State College will hold its second Campus Safety Month with speakers, workshops, seminars and sessions to address these public, home and personal security concerns and more. Open to Pensacola State students, faculty and staff, events are scheduled at all campuses – Pensacola, Milton and Warrington, and the Century and South Santa Rosa centers – from March 1-23.
