With the backdrop of the sun setting over Pensacola Bay, restaurant owner and general manager Wade Beroset announced the winners of this year’s PSC Sunset Photography Contest on Wednesday, March 4, at Jaco’s Bayfront Bar & Grille. Pensacola State College photography students Andrew Johnson and Kelena Jenkins won first-place and second-place honors, respectively.
The winning photograph, entitled “Cheers,” has earned Johnson his own month-long photography exhibit at Jaco’s in April. He also won the contest in 2024.
“It’s an honor to receive this prestigious award among so many talented artists attending Pensacola State College,” said Johnson. “Huge ‘thank you’ to Jaco’s for everything they do for the Visual Arts Department. They are a community hub for fine dining and artists alike.
“Every student who submitted work this year did a phenomenal job, and I’m thankful to be a part of this amazing group.”
Photography students Benjamin Calloway, Zoe Ellis, Gary Hines, Jason Mulvihill, Kaitlyn Provo, Natalee Stuart, Ebony Wilder, Teanna Woodard and Ben Word also participated in the contest with entries on exhibit at the restaurant for public voting throughout February.
All contest participants received Jaco’s gift cards and will have their work appear in the restaurant’s popular sunset wall calendar.
Jaco’s has presented the PSC Sunset Photography Contest since 2014 and further supports the college’s Visual Arts Department with a $1,500 scholarship available to eligible high school students applying to the Photography program and cash prizes for the annual student art exhibition at PSC.
During the awards presentation, Beroset spoke about the restaurant’s long-time support. “At Jaco’s, we love supporting the arts in our community; we love supporting art education programs at PSC; obviously, we love dogs; and we love sunsets,” said Beroset, alluding also to the restaurant’s dog-friendly patio, spectacular sunsets and comparable support of dog rescue organizations.
