INTRODUCTION
The Associate in Science degree in Respiratory Care provides the student with a broad foundation in respiratory care and is designed to prepare the student to master clinical competencies and prepare for all of the roles of a respiratory therapist. The program uses a combination of lecture, laboratory, simulation, and clinical instruction.
ACCREDITATION INFORMATION
The Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) accredits Entry into Professional Practice respiratory care programs at the Associate, Baccalaureate, and Master’s degree levels, as well as post-professional Degree Advancement respiratory care programs at the Baccalaureate and Master’s degree levels and Advanced Practice respiratory care programs at the graduate level. MISSION STATEMENT
The Respiratory Care program at Pensacola State College is committed to academic excellence for students seeking associate degrees in the discipline. Program graduates will be culturally competent and knowledgeable of theoretical concepts and principles that support skills and procedures critical to the respiratory therapist. As they enter the workforce, graduates will have achieved competency with general techniques common to practice settings available to them in the respiratory care community served by Pensacola State College. They will be prepared to meet standards for state certification and to function as technically competent, caring, responsible, and safe respiratory therapists in the community.
PROGRAM GOALS
Prepare graduates with demonstrated competence in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains of respiratory care practice as performed by registered respiratory therapists (RRTs).
PROGRAM STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (PSLOs)
- Communicate effectively in oral, written, and visual forms with health professionals, patients, and family members.
- Demonstrate ethical and professional conduct according to the American Association for Respiratory Care’s (AARC) code of ethics.
- Apply appropriate treatment modalities to respiratory patients in accordance with appropriate scope of practice.
- Manage respiratory care plans for adults, neonatal, and pediatric patients.
- Demonstrate the proper use of medical devices defined in the scope of practice.
- Perform entry level competencies of respiratory care techniques/procedures.
