The annual 100 for 100 Campaign scholarship recognition ceremony at Pensacola State College honored four PSC students on Friday, March 6, in the Jean & Paul Amos Performance Studio. Michelle Broadnax-Sullivan, Elizabeth Chapman, Tairkeisha Chapman and Shawna Logan each received the Dr. Garrett T. Wiggins “Live Your Dream” Endowed Scholarship, named in memory of the distinguished Escambia County educator.
“We focused this year on providing additional funding for the newly-endowed Dr. Garrett T. Wiggins ‘Live Your Dream’ Endowed Scholarship,” said PSC Director of Community and Special Initiatives Rameca Vincent Leary, Ph.D., who spearheads the 100 for 100 Campaign with an annual goal of volunteers raising $10,000 with $100 gifts from 100 donors. Since its establishment in 2021, the campaign has raised more than $80,000 for scholarships.
Scholarship recipient Elizabeth Chapman dreams of owning her own accounting firm. “I have been really grateful to be able to receive this award. It has opened up doors financially for me that I thought I wouldn’t be able to do, especially with having a lot of other financial responsibilities,” she said. “Just every little cent counts. So, I’m able to go and chase after my dreams.”
Logan says the scholarship will help her stay the course on her career path. “I am very honored to get this award. Before I even attended college, I went down the wrong road with friends, and I didn’t know where I was headed with getting a career,” she said. “I’m very thankful for this award because now I’m able to pay for little things in my house, get things for my kids, even just (pay for) tuition and my books.”
Broadnax-Sullivan, a member of the 100 for 100 Campaign volunteer team, has set aside her own culinary business to focus on completing her studies. “The Wiggins scholarship has really helped me financially when I wasn’t able to afford to come to school,” she said. “Now I’m at the point that I’m getting ready to take my capstone, so this is my last class. Thank you, Jesus!”
Beyond financial assistance for tuition and books, this year’s scholarship recipients received awards sponsored by the Alpha Alpha Theta Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. John Sullivan, the fraternity’s education director, spoke on behalf of the fraternity, saying that the organization hosts numerous humanitarian efforts in Pensacola and encourages young people to achieve their educational and entrepreneurial goals.
PSC Executive Director of Institutional Development Andrea Krieger also congratulated the scholarship recipients, highlighting the impact of donor support.
The Dr. Garrett T. Wiggins “Live Your Dream” Scholarship was established in 2005 and became endowed in 2023. It honors the memory of Wiggins, who served as the president of Booker T. Washington Junior College, the first black junior college in Florida, until its merger with Pensacola Junior College in 1965, and served as PJC’s director of research until his retirement in 1969.
PSC President Ed Meadows, Ed.D., stated, “The Dr. Garrett T. Wiggins ‘Live Your Dream’ Endowed Scholarship is important because it carries the name of this great educator; therefore, his contribution to higher education and to Pensacola State will always exist. When scholarships are awarded, students will learn what Dr. Wiggins meant from a historical perspective to the merger of the two institutions that are now Pensacola State College.”
Leary added, “The 100 for 100 Campaign would not have been successful this year without the support of donors, Dr. Meadows and our handpicked volunteers, many of whom are former students of mine and/or prior scholarship recipients.”
Campaign volunteers play a key role in making these scholarships possible. In addition to Leary and Broadnax-Sullivan, Tilden Whitfield, Darryl Jones, Trace Brown, Ingrid Davis, Evelyn Gant, Michelle Jones, Jonathan Stallworth and John Woods, Ed.D., made up this year’s team.
