To utilize our services, you must be enrolled in—or have applied for—an Associate of Science (A.S.) degree or a Certificate program at Pensacola State College. This includes both Career Certificate (clock-hour) programs and Technical Certificate programs.

Cooperative education (Co-Op) and internships both give students valuable, hands‑on experience, but Co‑Ops offer a more structured integration of academic coursework with supervised workplace practice. While internships vary widely in length, schedule, compensation, and academic expectations, Co‑Op assignments are intentionally designed to align with a student’s academic program, often extending beyond a single semester and sometimes alternating periods of full‑time study with full‑time employment. Co‑Ops may be paid or unpaid, can earn college credit, and emphasize an ongoing connection between classroom learning and professional skill development, providing a deeper, sustained engagement than many traditional internship experiences.

Since 1984, Pensacola State College’s Cooperative Education (Co-Op) Program has served as a vital connection between the college and the business community. Through co-op partnerships, students have the opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge in professional settings while employers gain access to motivated, emerging talent.

Our mission is to create mutually beneficial work experiences that support student learning while addressing the workforce needs of local employers. These partnerships also provide valuable insight into the skills and competencies employers need, helping inform the development of academic programs, curriculum, and workforce initiatives at Pensacola State College.

Cooperative Education provides employers with an opportunity to:

• Connect with students whose academic programs align with the organization’s workforce needs.
• Recruit and develop emerging talent before graduation.
• Provide students with meaningful, real-world work experience.
• Train and evaluate potential future employees.
• Bring new perspectives and skills into the workplace.
• Complete special projects or address short-term staffing needs without making a long-term employment commitment.
• Build a talent pipeline for future full-time positions.
• Continue working with successful co-op students across multiple academic terms.

Co-Op students are matched with positions related to their academic programs whenever possible, creating an experience that benefits both the student and the employer. Unlike many traditional internships, co-op assignments may extend beyond a single semester, giving employers additional time to train, mentor, and evaluate students for potential long-term employment.

While cooperative education, college work-study, and internships can all provide students with valuable workplace experience, they serve different purposes.

Cooperative Education is an academic program that integrates classroom learning with supervised, practical work experience. Co-Op assignments are designed to complement the student’s academic program and provide opportunities to apply knowledge and develop professional competencies in a real-world setting.

Co-Op positions may be paid or unpaid, depending on the position and applicable requirements. Assignments may also extend beyond one semester, allowing students and employers to build longer-term professional relationships. Students may also earn college credit by participating in a co-op.

Internships provide students with opportunities to gain practical experience related to their academic or career interests. Internships can vary in length, schedule, compensation, and academic requirements depending on the employer and academic program.

Cooperative Education is distinguished from a traditional internship by its emphasis on an ongoing connection between the student’s academic coursework and workplace experience. Co-Op assignments may also provide greater flexibility in scheduling and duration, including opportunities to alternate periods of full-time study with full-time employment.

A strong co-op partnership benefits more than an individual student or employer. It creates a direct connection between education and the workforce, helping students develop the skills employers need while giving businesses an opportunity to contribute to the preparation of tomorrow’s workforce. Through collaboration with Pensacola State College, employers can play an active role in developing talent, strengthening career pathways, and helping ensure that students graduate prepared to succeed in today’s workforce.
