Four students from Pensacola State College will be in Tallahassee on Monday, Feb. 16, to compete in the inaugural Sunshine State Debate presented by the Florida College System.

In August, 14 Escambia County EMTs-12 new and two returning students -enrolled in Pensacola State College’s Paramedic Program. Offered as a scholarship by the county, employees sign a contract to work as full-time paramedics with Escambia County for at least two years after earning their certificates and licenses.

Four years ago, Pensacola State College’s Charter Academy opened on the Warrington campus with 42 high school juniors and seniors. Of that “charter” group, 17 graduated in May 2023, with five of those seniors also earning associate degrees while others received transferable college credits.

Pensacola State College has promoted Hailey Lotz to executive director of athletics and alumni, a role in which she will continue to make a transformative impact on the college community. Lotz previously served as the executive director of development for alumni and athletics, where she led efforts that more than tripled Pirate Club memberships, increased major gifts for athletics, launched the Athletics Hall of Fame in 2019, and advanced the alumni matching scholarship program to establish endowed scholarships.

Pensacola State College celebrated the close of another exciting year of Pirate Athletics on April 25 at Hartsell Arena. Hailey Lotz, Executive Director of Development for Alumni/Athletics, shared opening remarks before dinner was served, provided by Sonny’s BBQ. President Ed Meadows then welcomed teams, their families, and supporters of PSC Athletics before coaches reflected on their seasons and handed out team awards: Pirate Award, Most Outstanding, and Presidential Award.
Dr. Brian Rucker, Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences at Pensacola State College, once again brought history to life – this time, with a full-scale wooden guillotine and a touch of gallows humor. On May 1, outside of Building 14, Rucker and his European History 1001 class re-enacted a slice of the French Revolution during their lesson on the Reign of Terror. In partnership with PSC Carpentry Instructor Shaun Garner and his students, Rucker asked that a realistic wooden guillotine be constructed, modeled after those used in the late 1700s.

For Natasha (Suggs) Johnson, the journey to becoming a nurse began with a dream – and a bus ticket. When she enrolled at Pensacola State College in 2014, Johnson didn’t have a car. Instead, she relied on public transportation, catching a 7 a.m. bus from Century every day and returning home by 7 p.m. – spending four hours commuting daily – to pursue her education.
Pensacola State College officially cut the ribbon on its new Veteran and Military Family Service Center (VMFSC) during a grand opening celebration held May 5 in Building 6 on the Pensacola Campus. Designed to serve as a central hub of resources, support and community, the VMFSC will offer vital services for PSC’s student veterans, active-duty personnel and their families.
The College’s District Board of Trustees will vote on the fee changes at the Tuesday, June 17, meeting set for 5:30 p.m. on the Pensacola campus. If approved by the Board of Trustees, the new fees will take effect for the Fall 2025 Semester.

Everything changed for Dr. Latiya Robinson in 2023 – in a heartbeat. Literally. After battling health issues for most of her life, beginning with childhood heart issues and undiagnosed Lupus, Robinson’s condition took a sharp turn. In her early 30s, she was diagnosed with heart failure, experiencing severe fatigue and joint pain. Within months, she was placed on a transplant list.
Three standout Pensacola State College Charter Academy High School students – Isaac Tindol, Victoria Raymond-Currier and McKenna Harrell – advanced to the Optimist International Club Level oratorical speech competition held Saturday, April 12, at the Gulf Breeze Rec Center. “My students performed very well in the competition this weekend. Their speech skills were on point, and I was surprised that at least one of them didn’t move on,” said English teacher Katrina Maurer. “We learned a lot going through the process, and in the future, we will better know how to plan our competition. A lot has changed in the speech world in the 30 years since I was in high school.”
Dr. Brian Ward wears many hats at Pensacola State College – and wears them well. A dedicated member of the Business Department, Ward teaches a full slate of courses in the Human Resources program, including the capstone course, Strategic Management, and is deeply engaged in College-wide service and leadership. He currently serves as President of the Faculty Senate, Chair of the Academy of Teaching Excellence, and Vice Chair of the Student Academic Appeals Committee. Additionally, he is a member of both the Scholarship Policy Committee and the Student Excellence Awards Committee, and he represents PSC on the Governor’s Statewide Articulation Coordination Committee.
Pensacola State College is proud to celebrate a new partnership with American Magic, the elite yacht racing team competing in the prestigious America’s Cup – and the magical opportunity it created for one exceptional PSC student. Braydon Sult, who will graduate in May with an Associate of Science degree in Mechanical Design & Fabrication, has accepted a full-time position with the American Magic team after impressing leadership during his six-week internship. For those who grew up in the 1950s and 60s, the iconic cartoon The Jetsons, which debuted in 1962, painted a vivid picture of the future. Set in 2026, the show’s catchy lyrics – “Meet George Jetson, his boy Elroy, daughter Judy, Jane – his wife…” – transported kids to a world of flying cars, robots, and sky-high glass houses. This futuristic aesthetic, known as Populuxe, defined consumer culture and design trends in mid-century America.

The Pensacola State College Brain Bowl team made its mark at the state tournament at Valencia College in Winter Park on March 28-29. The team secured one of four Wild Card spots by finishing fourth in the regional tournament at Chipola College in Marianna in February.
At the halfway mark of the season, Pensacola State baseball remains in the fight, currently standing at 4-4 in conference play. With a young roster facing tough competition early on, Head Coach Bryan Lewallyn describes the season as one of resilience and perseverance. “We hit the restart button after some challenges early in the season,” said Lewallyn. “As any season goes, adversity sets in. We got decimated with injuries right as we started to peak, which forced several key players to the sidelines.”

The Pensacola State men’s basketball team wrapped up an unforgettable season on March 23, falling 83-75 to Trinidad State in the first round of the NJCAA National Championship tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas. Entering as the no. 10 seed, the Pirates fought hard but ultimately fell short in their bid for a national title.
For nearly five decades, Coach Pete Peña has been a pillar of Pensacola State College’s athletic program, but his connection to PSC runs even deeper. Originally from New York, Peña found his true home in Pensacola when former men’s basketball coach Chip Boes brought him on as an assistant coach nearly 47 years ago.

The PSC Student Engagement and Leadership team, led by Coordinator Chandler White, was out in full force to assist students with whatever they needed. The 2025 Pensacola State College Homecoming Court nomination period ends this Friday, Jan. 17 at 6 p.m. Students can self-nominate by scanning the QR code on fliers posted throughout campus. Court voting begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16; voters can only cast one ballot. The top five candidates will be members of the 2025 Homecoming Court.
The PSC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Panhandle Conference season kicked off on Jan. 11 against Chipola College with a bit of love and support of the Pirates CARE food pantry, offering free entry to spectators who donated non-perishable food items, canned goods, rice, pasta, snacks, or hygiene products.

Pensacola State College faculty, staff, graduates, their families and friends began to gather at the Pensacola Bay Center around 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, to celebrate one of the most important milestones of these graduates’ lives.
Bradley Tarter’s pathway to medicine began with his passion for giving back to the community in October 2019. A regular volunteer at the Health and Hope Clinic in Pensacola since that time, Brad has accumulated around 524 volunteer hours, loaning the charitable organization his time and talents, according to Executive Director Sally Bergosh.
The second annual Holiday Art Market, hosted by the Visual Arts Department at the Anna Lamar Switzer Center for Visual Arts, provided shoppers with the opportunity to purchase unique gifts for their loved ones (or for themselves!), crafted by Pensacola State College students, with 100 percent of the proceeds directly supporting the artists.
As the holiday season quickly approaches, the PTK Beta Beta Gamma Chapter at Pensacola State College has wrapped up another year of generosity, with their annual “Cards & Socks” Collection for Homeless Veterans proving to be a complete success.
In its eighth year since conception by the local Association of Florida Colleges (AFC) chapter in 2016, the competition just got a little more serious, as the Humanities and Social Sciences Department at the Pensacola Campus created an interactive display that not only won but earned 50 out of 40 possible points “because one of the judges couldn’t resist giving them extra credit,” claimed contest coordinator Erin Roush, Assistant Department Head, Applied Technology and Professional Services.
Nursing students excitedly gathered in the sanctuary of the Pentecostal Church on Dec. 12, 2024 to prepare for one of the most monumental moments of their lives, the Pensacola State College Nurse Pinning ceremony during which they cross from being nursing students to becoming nurses in the field.

What a year it has been for the Pirate soccer team. Undefeated in conference play, they emerged as Region 8 Division 2 Champions and South Atlantic District Champions. They were one of twelve teams to make it to the national tournament, finishing the year ranked No. 10 in the country.

PSC Fall 2024 Commencement is right around the corner, at 5:00 p.m. on Dec. 13 at the Pensacola Bay Center. Doors open to graduates and the public at 4:00 p.m. Graduates will earn their diplomas and certificates for the following degrees: Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, Career Certificate, Technical Certificate, Advanced Technical Certificate, Advanced Technical Diploma, Bachelor of Applied Science, and Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Once in a while, there is a teacher who sparks a passion within his or her students to make a mark on the world in some way – to excel, to create. Walter F. Spara, a Pensacola Junior College (now Pensacola State) English professor from 1966 to 2000, touched the lives of thousands of students.
