Pensacola State College, The Brand

Our Brand

The Importance of the brand

Why do we need consistency in our brand?

A unified approach to graphics fosters a strong and consistent image for both internal and external audiences, and differentiates us from other institutions. Every time we use our logo, tagline, photographs, or graphics, we are creating an image of Pensacola State College. These verbal and visual elements either create a first impression or they reinforce the image of our College.

Who is responsible for following the style guide?

All of us! Everyone who communicates internally or externally on behalf of the College contributes to our brand. The success of our brand identity program depends on the cooperation of all members of the College community.

Are there exceptions to the style guide?

Rarely, if any! In those rare cases, the changes MUST be approved by the Office of Marketing and College Information.

General questions regarding the Brand Manual/Style Guide including logo, color palette, typography, graphics and imagery must be directed to the Office of Marketing and College Information.

Where can I find a digital version of the Pensacola State College logo?

Contact the Office of Marketing and College Information and we will provide you with the file in the format you need.

What digital forms of the logo are available?

.eps – preferred by vendors and is generally used in higher-end desktop publishing programs. This format also has the advantage of being able to make it as big or as small as you wish without losing sharpness. You may not be able to open the .eps file directly on your computer without specific software but it can be ‘placed’ into a Word document.

.png – works well in the various Microsoft Office applications.

.pdf – good format to send to others due to the ubiquity of the Adobe Acrobat Reader program and is technically similar to the .eps format.

.jpg – can be used in web applications, though professional web developers should prefer to create specific sizes and resolutions from one of the other formats. The .jpg should not be used in physical sizes larger than a few inches across.

Who do I call if I have a problem?

Please contact the PSC Office of Marketing and College Information with any questions or concerns about logo or any other design issues. We’re a creative, professional team that provides services to all divisions, support areas and programs that wish to communicate through printed or electronic materials. Our office produces and/or supervises the production of ALL official College materials.

Do I have to have my designs approved by anyone?

Yes! All materials utilizing the PSC logo or tagline MUST have final approval from the Office of Marketing and College Information.

Our Name

Our formal name is Pensacola State College and should always be used on the first reference within communications. To avoid repetition of ‘Pensacola State College,’ use ‘PSC,’ ‘Pensacola State,’ or the ‘College’ after a first reference. The proper possessive form of our name is: Pensacola State College’s, PSC’s, or the College’s.

Our Tagline

“Go here. Get there.”

Our tagline helps us integrate the brand identity message and positions Pensacola State College clearly in the minds of our target audiences.

The tagline should not be used separate from the logo and never used twice in marketing materials. A good rule of thumb is to engage the Office of Marketing and College Information when using the logo and tagline.

Color Codes Explained

Wondering when to use what? Below you will find a brief explanation of when each code will be necessary.

Pantone
The Pantone Matching System (PMS, also known as “Spot” colors) is a system of thousands of numbered swatches that are specially premixed ink. This system creates the most accurate color match and the sharpest details. This color family is exclusively used for print projects.
CMYK
The CMYK (also knows as 4-color, or process) family is made up of four ink colors – Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. These colors are mixed together at the time of printing in order to create the specific color required. It is used whenever there are full color images, or when the number of colors makes it more practical than using just PMS colors. CMYK is also the primary system for digital printing, as specific pantone colors can not be put into an inkjet or laser printer.
RGB
This color family consists of three colors – Red, Green, Blue. It is the primary format for screen rendering and digital images, used in websites and cameras and televisions. It is also important to note that while these color are not always exact and will vary from one monitor to the next depending on screen brightness, lighting conditions, and hue & contrast settings.
HEX
When computers name a color, they use a so-called hexadecimal code that most humans gloss over: 24-bit colors. That is, 16,777,216 unique combinations of exactly six characters made from ten numerals and six letters — preceded by a hash mark. Pixels on back-lit screens are dark until lit by combinations of red, green, and blue. Hex numbers represent these combinations with a concise code. This color family should only be used for web based projects.

Two primary font families: ITC Garamond and Expressway. Both offer a wide range of weights and styles. If unavailable, substitute Calibri for Expressway and Times New Roman for ITC Garamond.

Just remember that clear, legible communication is the primary goal.
