Stephon Adams, Ayla Foreman, Justice Emerick and Sevy St. Hilaire will represent Pensacola State College in the first Sunshine State Debate.
Four students from Pensacola State College will be in Tallahassee on Monday, Feb. 16, to compete in the inaugural Sunshine State Debate presented by the Florida College System.
Stephon Adams, Ayla Foreman, Justice Emerick and Sevy St. Hilaire will engage in a full day of debate held at Florida’s Historic Capitol and have the added opportunity to tour the state Capitol, meet with state leaders and be recognized during the legislative session on Tuesday.
The Florida College System is launching the new collegiate debate in celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary and in honor of Presidents’ Day, adopting the Ronald Reagan presidential debate style, which emphasizes civility, storytelling and humor.
PSC political science instructor Robert Thead has been coaching the team with support from PSC English instructor Lauren Baugus and training content provided by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for the students and the college,” said Thead. “The competitors have the chance to be part of this statewide debate initiative, and the college gets to be involved in its inaugural year. And what better time to begin, with this year’s Semiquincentennial and all the activities planned by the State of Florida.”
