The Pensacola Guitar Ensemble presented its first recital in 1983. In 2002, with the addition of alto guitars, bass and contrabass guitars, the ensemble presented its first performance as a guitar orchestra. Since then, it has added two soprano guitars, a second contrabass and as many as five prime guitars. The orchestra has about 15 members each semester.
- To become a member, you must enroll in an applied guitar class or a guitar ensemble class at Pensacola State College or the University of West Florida. Non-students can audition to become members.
- The orchestra performs a variety of music – Renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic, impressionistic, 20th century, popular, jazz, rock ’n’ roll, Motown, etc.
- It presents at least one major recital each spring.
- Pensacola Guitar Ensemble and Pensacola Guitar Orchestra members have earned several awards, fellowships and scholarships – including first prize in the Florida Community College Activities Association’s Music Student Artist Competition and Pine Belt Classical Guitar Competition; the Florida State University Graduate Fellowship; Pensacola Guitar Society’s Tim Bauer Memorial Scholarship and Ike Terry Memorial Scholarship.
Joe Stallings, Founder and Director
 Joe Stallings is a published author and composer and has been a member of the Pensacola State College Academy of Teaching Excellence since 1995. He is the founder and director of guitar programs at Pensacola State College and the University of West Florida where he teaches classical guitar, guitar ensemble, guitar orchestra, beginning guitar and music theory. He is founder of the Pensacola Guitar Society and Pensacola State College Guitar Association.
