Preparing Veterans To Enter & Complete College

Welcome

The TRiO Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) program at Pensacola State College helps prepare eligible veterans to enter and successfully complete college.  VUB offers a personalized range of services, based on an individual’s self-identified needs assessment, academic testing and career plans.

Funding for TRiO VUB is provided by the U.S. Department of Education for 130 students and is free for qualified veterans.

What We Can Do For You

VUB offers an extensive variety of services to help veterans, and all services and supplies are offered free of charge.

Academic

  • Academic assessments to help tailor an individual learning plan
  • College prep and refresher courses in reading, writing, math, science, foreign languages and computer skills
  • Tutoring and classroom based instruction
  • GED test preparation

Career

  • Interests and skills assessments
  • Career exploration and discussion of related education requirements

Financial Aid

  • Assistance with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Research and explanation of additional college financial aid options, including loans, grants, scholarships and the GI Bill

Enrollment Assistance

  • Assistance with college admissions and enrollment forms
  • Assistance with choosing programs/majors and courses

Cultural Field Trips

  • Free trips to cultural events
  • University campus visits

Learning Lab Peer Tutoring

  • Assistance with developmental studies
  • Individual and group tutoring provided by professional staff

Computer Access

  • 9 computers available for veteran student use

Educational Videos

  • Variety of videos aimed at student success includes study skills, test taking, stress management, time management, resume writing, interview skills, healthy relationships, academics and finances

Peer Coaching

  • Support and encouragement provided to new and current veteran students.

Veterans Upward Bound also offers one-day workshops on topics such as critical reading, time and stress management, goal setting, resume writing and personal finances.

Eligibility

Veterans must meet several criteria to qualify for the Veterans Upward Bound program:

  • First-generation college student (neither parent has earned a 4-year degree) and/or considered low-income according to federal guidelines
  • Military service of at least 180 days, or if less than 180 days, released for medical reasons
  • Discharge must have been other than dishonorable
  • Academic need

Submit a Veterans Upward Bound application and a copy of your DD214 to our office:

What is Veterans Upward Bound?

The Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) program at Pensacola State College is a federally funded TRIO program that provides college prep and/or GED courses at no cost to qualified veterans.

How Much Does the VUB Cost?

Nothing!  All VUB classes and supplies are free to qualified veterans.

How Do I Qualify For VUB?

All participants must have at least 181 days of active service with other than a dishonorable discharge. All participants must be either low-income (based on federal guidelines) or potential first generation college students (neither parent has a baccalaureate degree). All participants must have academic need.

What if I've Been Out Of School A Long Time And Need To Refresh My Skills?

Come and see us.  We have the expertise to help you. Veterans receive personalized learning plans based on their individual needs.  Academic counseling and tutoring are also available to help you achieve success.

What Are The Classes Offered In This Program?

  • One-day workshops include topics such as critical reading, goal setting, resume writing, time management, stress management and personal finance.
  • Refresher and college prep courses designed to help veterans brush up on their academic skills or master new ones. These include math, reading and composition, science, college success and computer basics.

When And Where Are Classes Held?

VUB classes are held at Pensacola State College on the main campus.  Classes are held in 5 eight-week cycles, which start in October, January, March, May and July. Call the VUB office at (850) 484-2068 to schedule an interview and enroll for orientation.

Will I Be Able To Use The Library And Other Services On Campus?

Yes.  After one term of enrollment, VUB students have access to most campus facilities.

Will VUB Provide Financial Aid?

All services provided VUB are free and financial aid is not needed. When you are ready to apply to a college, staff will help you with the financial aid application process at your chosen school.

What Kind Of Programs Will I Be Ready For Once I Finish The VUB College Prep Courses?

The courses offered by Veterans Upward Bound are refresher courses. Successfully completing a subject area enables you to enter any of the following:

  • Two-year college
  • Four-year college/university
  • Professional training program
  • Vocational certificate program

Will VUB Assist Me With A Career Path Or Help Me Choose A School?

Yes. Staff can work with you to determine what career field might be appropriate for you. We can also help you narrow down the school choices that will best prepare you for your chosen field.

How Do I Apply For The VUB Program?

Call, email or stop by our office to make an appointment.  Bring your DD214 and a copy of your most recent tax return.  If you do not have your DD214, we can help you obtain it.  After answering some questions and filling out the VUB application and other forms, staff will set up an assessment appointment to help determine your needs.
